My 4-Year Experience in the Parul University Hostel – An Honest Review by a South Indian
It’s been a long journey—four years of life in the hostel at Parul University, and believe me, it’s been a mix of comfort, difficulties, and memories that will be with me forever. Stepping into the North from the South, Vadodara seemed like a new world. Everything was new—language, food, climate—but the Parul University hostel soon became my second home.
Entering the Parul University hostel as a South Indian student was like arriving in a new world. I still recall my first day – suitcase in hand, not knowing what to anticipate, but optimistic. In the past four years, that uncertainty turned into memories that I will never forget, lessons, friendships, and a deeper understanding of life itself.
What I Really Learned in 4 Years
- Money value – From coping with ₹2,000 a month to haggling over street vendors.
- Food value – Even plain dal tasted gourmet after not eating lunch during exams.
- Parents’ love – You truly realize your parents’ affection only when you are sick and isolated.
- Comedy, fights, and late-night discussions
- True friendship – From 2 a.m. ranting to surprise birthday parties.

My Experience with Hostel Rooms
I have lived in some different rooms over the years – from a 3-seater non-AC arrangement to a 2-seater AC room at Tilak Bhawan. The Parul University hostel rooms are typically tidy, safe, and cozy, provided you get the blocks with attached bathrooms. Some such buildings as Sardar Bhawan – C and Albert Einstein block provide immense privacy and quiet.
If you’re considering the hostel fees of Parul University, they vary a lot—from ₹84,500 to ₹1,75,000 based on occupancy, AC/non-AC, and facilities. I began with a non-AC 3-sharing accommodation to cut down on expenses, but later switched to a 2-sharing AC for greater comfort, particularly in the summer.
The Food Journey – North to South and Everything In-Between
When I came initially, north Indian mess food was fine. I did not mind the transition. Roti, sabzi, dal—new, and I was willing to try anything. But later, after three months (or perhaps a year), the routine menu began to irk me. Same dal, same sabzi, yes—chapati every day for lunch became tiring.
That’s when I also tasted the South Indian mess. I wouldn’t say it was too much like home, but it was a comfort. Sambar, rasam, dosa, and curd rice were at times food that made me feel at home. It wasn’t top-of-the-line authentic, but it was passable for a hostel.
As a hostel dweller at Parul University, you get used to venturing out. Outside the mess hall, there’s food all around. Favourite local eats include:
- Poha – light and excellent for breakfast
- Kakra and Samosa – ideal evening snacks
- Bonda – an occasional but blissful discovery
Also, nearly every meal has chaas (buttermilk) and salad accompanying it, which are wonderful additions, particularly in summer.
Life Beyond the Mess – Amenities & Comfort
One thing I’ve enjoyed during my stay here is the security and amenities. All Parul University hostels have the following:
- Wi-Fi
- Laundry
- Healthy meals
- Gym facility
- CCTV and Campus security
Even there are notifications to parents, which is reassuring when you’re away from home. Although I never myself used the swimming pool in the Parul University hostel, I’ve heard it’s a favorite place on evenings and weekends.
